Is this idea sustainable? Absolutely!! There is a clear and tested mechanism for incoming junior doctors to take over the running of each hospital site and develop and improve it, and use towards their own patient safety projects. This can help avoid the learned helplessness that junior doctors can otherwise sometimes feel trying to bring change within the NHS.
Our preliminary studies have shown that any efforts spend creating the site is vastly repaid by efficiency savings, even in small cohorts of doctors. Also allowing tacit knowledge to be retained will lock in improvements beyond the 1 year cycle of rotating doctors.
Show a junior doctor how to do something and they will remember for a week. Give junior doctors the means to organise themselves and they will seek to find ways to continuously improve the quality and safety of their care.
